METTE TOMMERUP
Born in Denmark, Miami-based digital and video artist Mette Tommerup received a B.F.A. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1990 and an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 1995. She has exhibited her work at the Miami Art Museum; the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach; and the Chelsea Art Museum, New York. A recipient of awards from the School of Visual Arts, Copenhagen and the America-Denmark Foundation, Tommerup has been a visiting artist at SUNY, Stonybrook, and at Washington University in St. Louis.

Tommerup, whose subject matter ranges from social commentary and history to memories of her native Denmark, studied traditional painting and printmaking before becoming a digital artist. She uses the latest computer software and high-tech pigments to create what she calls digital paintings--unique, richly-colored prints in which photo-based images have been digitally altered—blurred, stretched, or warped, sometimes beyond recognition. Mimicking the artist’s hand via digital manipulation, Tommerup creates spatially complex and rigorous designs which unite printmaking with painting and art with technology in startling, often beautiful ways.
