| ALEX SWEET |
Born in 1983 in Hollywood, Florida, emerging artist Alex Sweet studied at Miami’s New World School of the Arts, receiving a B.F.A. with Highest Honors in 2005. He has exhibited his work at Art Basel Miami Beach; Locust Projects; The House; and at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami, where he will have his first solo show in 2008.
In How to Throw a Punch, the fighting roosters were copied from a childhood "How to Draw" book, while the boxers on the right are based on a diagram in a combat manual showing how to throw a right hook. Sweet "completed" the drawing by wrapping it around a heavyweight punching bag, and then recorded himself punching it, as shown in the video. Taken together, the drawing and video allude to the gap between academic learning and real world experience, and between thinking and doing, ideas Sweet explores in other of his works.
