MONA KUHN
Born in Sao Paolo in 1969, Mona Kuhn received her B.A. from Ohio State University in 1993, and later studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. From 1998 until 2004, she was an independent scholar at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, where she now lives and works. Kuhn has had solo shows in Berlin, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and New York. Her work has been acquired by the Miami Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Paul Allen Collection in Seattle. Two monographs devoted to Kuhn’s work have also been published: Mona Kuhn Photographs (Steidl, Göttingen, 2004), and Mona Kuhn Evidence (Steidl, Göttingen, 2007).

Internationally recognized for her elegant photographs of the nude human body, Kuhn works very close to her subjects, often with a depth of field of only a few inches. This reflects her intimate relationship with her models--friends she has worked with over the course of years--and also gives the photographs a strong tactile appeal. Using cropping and soft focus, Kuhn intentionally makes her images more abstract, feeling that they then evoke the memory of a human interaction rather than documenting a clinical encounter.
