| JOHN ESPINOSA |
Los Angeles-based John Espinosa earned a B.F.A. from Miami's New World School of the Arts in 1998 and an M.F.A. from Yale University in 2001. A painter, sculptor, photographer, performance and video artist, Espinosa has exhibited his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York. He is represented in a number of public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.
Espinosa's art has been shaped by his upbringing in central Florida, in particular the man-made, hypernatural utopian realms of Disneyworld, Universal Studios, and Epcot Center. His imagery references a wide range of cultural data culled from these and other versions of "the truth," such as science, science fiction, and the Jehovah's Witness religion in which he was strictly brought up. Infused with an otherworldly sensibility and wry sense of humor, Espinosa's improbable narratives blur reality and fantasy as they gently comment on contemporary pop culture and the human condition.
