| WESTEN CHARLES |
Miami-based Westen Charles, a sculptor, painter, video and installation artist, received a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute in New York and a B.F.A. from the University of Miami. In 1999, he co-founded Locust Projects, a non-profit alternative display space in Miami which features installations, video art and new media from around the world. A recipient of the Chestler Contemporary Art Award and the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship, Charles has exhibited his work at the Fort Lauderdale Museum, the Lowe Museum, Coral Gables, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. Charles, whose work is represented in the Miami Art Museum, currently serves on the Board of Directors of Locust Projects and holds a faculty appointment at New World School of the Arts.
Charles’s conceptual art alludes to domestic settings and suburban life with wit, irony, and a sense of nostalgia. Often incorporating surprising elements into his work--such as taxidermied and real animals, used bowling balls, coconuts, clothes dryer lint, and thrift shop items--Charles explores a variety of subjects pertaining to contemporary life, including domestic violence, the shared characteristics of humans and animals, and the cherishing or fate of personal possessions.
